This category describes an All-in-one printer. An all-in-one gets its name because it is a combination of copier, printer, scanner, and fax machine. HP, Canon, Brother, Lexmark, and Epson manufacture these types of printers. The print engine can be inkjet, laser or wax process. There is some overlap with inkjet and laser printers. Although they are usually based on a printer, they have enough differences to warrant their own category. The addition of a scanner adds the ability to scan as well as copy. A fax circuit board can use the scanner to send images over a phone line. The control panel is upgraded to allow an interface with the new functions.
They eliminate the need for a standalone scanner, as well as the redundant scan and print functions of a fax machine. Having one device capable of four functions is more cost effective than four devices capable of single functions.
